Installing ArcGIS 9.3 On Microsoft Windows 7 – Updated!

[Update 1 Below]

[Update 2 Below]

[Update 3 Below]

So this afternoon I decided to install Microsoft Windows 7 on one of my laptops. The install ran very well. A few drivers were missing but once connected to the internet the rest of the drivers were all updated.

Thought it was time to install ArcGIS 9.3. Mounted the ISO using Virtual CloneDrive. Daemon Tools does not work on Windows 7 so Virtual CloneDrive is a good alternative.

Mounted the ArcEditor 9.3 ISO and selected the options I normally do. Just beginning the install and I get this:

image

Hmm ok, weird I thought. I decided to try it again. This is running with all default settings. I haven’t changed any of the security settings in Windows 7 as yet. This time round the install starts to kick off and keeps going until this:

image

image

So cancelling rolls back any changes that has been made which is good.

image

Time to make some configuration changes around security of Windows 7 and try again. I am getting permission errors so I firstly I am going to turn on the new UAC system in Windows 7 and run the install again.

Update 1

Did some digging on the first error that was thrown and found out that this was due to vbscript.dll not be registered. Ok so this is an easy fix.

Find cmd.exe. Right-click and “Run as Administrator”. When the window launches paste this command: regsvr32 "C:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll" and enter. This will register vbscript.dll.

Now for the second error, I browsed the CD and went into the folder Desktop. Right-click on setup.exe and “Run as Administrator”. This should launch the setup with elevated privileges.

This time around the setup seems to run very well and passes the mark I was at last time so it looks like everything is working. Until this happens:

With no other choice but to click OK, the installation starts rolling itself back and you are presented with a lovely message as follows:

Ok so we are back to an error. We nearly got there. Will try and figure this one out and post and update. Hopefully sometime soon :)

Update 2

Ok wow this was a interesting error to diagnose and find a workaround for. The good news is that I have!

So what needs to be done and why the error? Windows 7 ships with Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0. When the ArcGIS 9.3 installation runs though it needs or uses Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 4.0. If it’s not present the installer tries to install it. Trying to install it cause it to throw an error.

Ok so here’s what required to get it to work. Download Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 4.0 SP2 from the Microsoft Download Centre here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/…

RIght-click on the .msi file and select Properties. Select the Compatibility tab. In here, tick the option: "Run this program in compatibility mode for:”.  From the drop down menu, select Windows Vista. You Compatibility tab should look like below:

image

Click OK and then double-click on the .msi file. Select Custom installation and select the following options as below:

image

Click install. The install should run successfully.

One this is completed, ArcGIS 9.3 can be installed. Browse to the CD and into the folder Desktop. Right-click on setup.exe and “Run as Administrator”. This should launch the setup with elevated privileges. Continue with the installation as you would normally and wahoo all done!

I loaded a .shp file from the samples and this can be seen below running on Windows 7.

image

So it was a bit of a task to figure out why things wouldn’t work on Windows 7 and basically the problems came down to the following:

  1. Registering vbscript.dll
  2. Installing Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 4.0 SP2 In Windows Vista Compatibility Mode
  3. Running ArcGIS 9.3 Installation With Elevated Permissions

Detailed information for above steps can be found above. Time to install ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1.

Update 3

There was no problems in installing ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1. I will be testing general compatibility over the next few days and I will post about any issues I find :)

Got the same problem like Andrew ? I can’t setup the msxml.msi file with Windows Vista compatibilty. I am only able to configure "previous version of Windows"

I have installed Windows 7 x86 ger. If i install arcgis desktop 9.3 (C:\Program Files\ArcGIS and C:\Program Files\Phyton) it somehow DESTROYS the registry. The installation itself works fine, but after restart when I open the dialog "installed updates" or "activate/deactivate windows feature" nothing happens, it just load and load and load… Also, ITS NOT POSSIBLE to restore the system with the "windows recovery", you will have to use the "system copy" to restore – if you made one, first try i had to set up the whole windows 7 os again :)

So my advice, if you plan to install arcgis desktop 9.3 on windows 7, make an system copy of your whole windows drive.

Edit: I use the official RC1.

At least restoring the system with an full backup only needs 20 minutes :)

  5. Hugo says:

I also have installed arcGis 9.3 on windows 7 RC1 build 7100, and the "installed updates" or "activate/deactivate windows" features of the OS are gone. This is wired, how can this application modify the win7 ?? we should report this bug to MS and ESRI.

it seems that i must re-install the whole system. FML

What about licensing it??… I can’t make Lmtools works on windows 7. ReRead License File says: "Reread Server Failed"

I have a bit different issue with ArcGIS and Windows 7. The customer I am working for is still on 9.2 so instead of 9.3, I am stuck on 9.2 for now. I had ArcGIS 9.2 SP6 installed on my personal vista computer, then I upgraded the from vista to Windows 7. I did not do a fresh wipe but just an upgrade.

ArcGIS 9.2 seems to work fine (actually better draw times). But I have encounter 1 problem. When I open a mxd has has missing references (ie a copied mxd from my work computer) ArcGIS locks up and will not open the file. Not sure if it just SDE references or any missing references that causes this issue. This is a pain in the but since I must create a new file for every existing file.

I was hoping that someone had a solution for this.

    i have a problem in windows7.

i have been trying to install arcgis server.

Actually it’s installed but just cannot create web server. Namely addinstance cannot run correctly. it is run fix %49-50 process but do nothing.

all permissions is okay on required folders and etc.

    thanks for reply

  18. geoelo says:

Allow me to share my experience with W7 Ultimate x32 and ArcGIS v. 9.2:

ArcGIS v.9.2 installation on W7 corrupted a few vital files. Install failed and it ended giving me no single way to windows update, system restore whatsoever, but for complete OS re-installation.

Happily enough I had some time to put my system back (repartitioning and having some fun with the drives) and I gave Windows XP Mode a try, and I have to say it worked like a charm there.

One more note: beware of RAM drop-down when starting ArcMap on W7 under Windows XP Mode on Virtual PC…

    Greetings!

For people who are experiment problems with Windows 7 registry (e.g When trying to make changes to your Windows configuration the "Turn Windows Features On and Off" dialog box is empty), caused for some applications writing a lot to the registry (e.g. ArcGIS, Office, VS2008) here is the solution:

    forums.esri.com/…/Thread.asp

    The short instructions are:

    1) If you are receiving the "Low Registry Space" error, set the Registry Size Limit to "unlimited":

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

    Key: RegistrySizeLimit

    Type: REG_DWORD

    Value: 0xffffff (4294967295)

    2) Reboot

    3) As a Administrator open a Command Prompt and run "SFC /SCANNOW". The command should complete successfully and if any errors were found, they should be corrected.

Thanks to everyone who spend a lot of time to solve it. Thx Jim and others.

Just Installed Arc 9.3 onto Win7,

I had similar difference as No 4 I just left compatability at previous versions and the install worked fine.

    also

"Now for the second error, I browsed the CD and went into the folder Desktop. Right-click on setup.exe and “Run as Administrator”. This should launch the setup with elevated privileges." I did not run into an issue.

I could not find this option so ignored it :-)

An additional problem I found was registering a feature class extension (DateGUID.dll). I used the same method as described for registering the vbscript.dll

Find cmd.exe. Right-click and “Run as Administrator”. When the window launches paste this command: regsvr32 "C:\..\DateGUID.dll" and enter. This will register DateGUID.dll.

  25. Shad Campbell says:

I am having extremely slow connection issues with SDE… I’ve tried both Direct Connect and Service based SDE connections. both take 10 minutes to even open the database in ArcCatalog and display the feature classes… which takes a few seconds in XP. I’ve replicated this problem on a laptop and 2 different desktop PC all running Windows 7 and ArcGIS 9.3 with SP1 so I know it’s not a network card driver issue. Anyone else having or not having this issue??

  26. Shad Campbell says:

I found a fix to my slow connection issue with SDE… it was a network setting issue not related to SDE. The fix was to run the following command as administrator… super fast now!!

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

  27. thanks for tutorial. it’s useful for me.

  28. Ahmed says:

I haven’t tried windows 7 yet (seems like microsoft just realised how better is Mac), but I would say this is brilliant.

I hope ArcGIS 9.4 (the stylish version) is gonna work pefectly on windows 7. I hope ERDAS as well.
