ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1 Announcement

ESRI has announced that ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1 will be available for download later this year in November. There are a bundle of fixes for ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Engine, ArcGIS Server and ArcIMS.

The issue/fix count as of now for each of the products is as follows:

Product Issue Count
ArcGIS Desktop ~ 70
ArcGIS Engine 1
ArcGIS Server ~ 80
ArcIMS 1

Some of the issues being address that I find interesting:

ArcGIS Desktop

  • NIM006247 – Saving shape file edits more the eight times in ArcMap leads to slower and slower performance.
  • NIM008646 – If the Geographic Transformation is not set when data from a personal geodatabase or SDE is initially added to ArcMap, setting the
transformation at a later time through Data Frame Properties > Coordinate System tab > Transformations will not transform the data.
  • NIM035931 – Connections to ArcSDE SQL Server Express geodatabases from ArcMap are not being closed successfully when a new map
document is started without restarting ArcMap. This can cause SQL Server Express database detach operations to fail.
  • NIM036642 – Cached ArcGIS map services save the cached tiles within a directory name that reflects the name of the layer in the map. If the same
map service is used in layers with different names, additional local tile caches will be created unnecessarily. The local cache directory should reflect
the service name and not the layer name in order to avoid redundancy.
  • NIM036870 – If ArcCatalog fails to detach a database from ArcSDE for SQL Server Express, the database is not detached but it disappears
temporarily from the table of contents and no error is displayed.
  • NIM037274 – ArcSDE (for SQL Server Express) connections are not being released when a map document is closed but ArcMap remains open.

ArcGIS Server

  • NIM035719 – When absolute positioning is turned on in Visual Studio 2008, the first task added to the TaskManager can be difficult to configure.
  • NIM035825 – Unable to write to Blob field on mobile device.
  • NIM035897 – ArcGIS Server Manager templates only support a single instance of a given language.
  • NIM035919 – If the map has a background color set, the cache generated on demand does not honor it and is not set correctly in the tiles generated.
The result is inconsistent transparency behavior when previewing these cached services.
  • NIM037221 – After the SOM service is restarted, logging in to Manager incorrectly displays the server status as being ‘Offline’. A second login will
    show the correct status.
  • NIM037650 – Services Directory does not display description for cached map service created with ArcGIS Server 9.2 configuration file.

Something to note mentioned in the PDF:

Both the following list and the availability of targeted service packs are subject to change at any time without notice.
Users should plan accordingly and, if advisable, wait for the release of a given service pack prior to making
commitments.
